Racial Equality - Week 7 Entry 1

It is upsetting that nearly every week, you come across news and videos of people openly discriminating another based on their race, gender, and even sexual preferences. In recent years, tolerance for such discrimination has been slowly dropping, but yet, such incidents still happen frequently.
Racial discrimination is detrimental to our society, creating animosity, breeding bigotry and hinders social sustainability development. Ridding racial discrimination might be ways in the future, but I believe it is time that everyone takes a stand. Often stereotypical comments or jokes on racism are marginalised and dismissed but I believe these are often the roots to such problems. This creates a barrier in which one race views differences in another, and leaves room for it to develop into further resent or distaste. When such jokes and comments are made, though often not offensive due to its neutral delivery, it is important for those on the receiving end to speak up and mention its inappropriateness.
In my first two years living in Australia, I resided in their second biggest city, Launceston. In that area it is often not uncommon to receive racial verbal insults hurled by locals in the area. After experience different areas in Australia, it is noticeable that such incidents are mostly predominant in more rural areas that has a lack of experiences with minority groups. This lack of communication and interaction with minority groups creates such distasteful mentality. Though it is unlikely interaction with minority groups will change due to its rural setting, I believe the responsibility of advocating against such behaviour falls upon that of the victim receiving such insults and comments. Standing up for themselves and hopefully allowing them to understand the ill effects of such remarks. Though governmental policies and laws could help reduce such incidents. It does not resolve the underlying issue of bigotry as all it does is that it merely supresses such behaviours.
In conclusion, it is important for people to stand up for themselves in such situations, and claiming victimhood with a higher authority will not help progress such situations.
