Sustainable Production - Week 6 Entry 2
Since the
industrial revolution, progress of our species has been improving exponentially,
while the planet’s environment has been doing the opposite. Production has been
increasing greenhouse gases, air pollutants and draining resources. However, certain
production has been benefiting economies, reducing poverty, and improving the
life of people in certain ways.
Making production sustainable, it is important to retain a
balance between the triad of environmental sustainability, economic
sustainability, and social sustainability. When it comes to production,
environmental sustainability as mentioned above, is often the one which
suffers.
Being economically viable in our time and age is no longer
enough, part of the focus has to be shifted to the workers and the environment.
Ensuring a healthy environment for both the workers and people around its
surrounding context is extremely important, while also providing socially rewarding
outcomes to its workers.
The control of air pollutants is vital, as it not only
damages the health of everyone within its context but also damages the
environment. Greenhouse gases specifically has to be controlled to avoid
further harm to the atmosphere. Another important aspect of production is the conservation
of resources. Making a simple item could require a surprisingly huge amount of
resource, and companies have the responsibility to try to reduce the amount of
resource required. Alternative production methods are starting to surface with
our advance in technology, it is crucial that the companies start exploring the
alternatives. Switching towards renewable energy would also greatly benefit the
environment but might drive costs up. Hence, it is important to find a method
of production that keeps the triad of sustainability balanced.
In conclusion, production is an essential in everyone’s
daily lives. However, moving on to a sensitive point in time, it is crucial
companies find the appropriate balance between the triad of sustainability to reduce
their negative impact on the progress to a sustainable world.
